The premier of the Superman Movie, much of which was filmed in Cleveland, was held at Phoenix Theatres Great Northern Mall on Thursday July 10, 2025.
Our good friend Kevin Goodman and BlueBridge Networks hosted a gala event that included food, a live band, lots of photo opps with props and Cosplayers and more.
The movie itself was terrific. Of course I was looking for and very aware of the Cleveland landmarks (Progressive Field, the Arcade, Terminal Tower, etc.) in the movie having been downtown for some of the filming. It's a good story, good acting and an amazing display on the Encore screen which fills the whole wall of the theater. The reclining seats vibrate and rumble at the appropriate times during the film. The Dolby Atmos sound system goes way beyond surround sound.
Dolby Atmos expands on existing surround sound systems by adding height channels as well as free-moving sound objects, interpreted as three-dimensional objects with neither horizontal nor vertical limitations. Dolby Atmos technology allows the storage and distribution of 128 audio tracks with metadata describing sound properties such as position and volume (and their variation over time). The audio mix is rendered specifically for the theater's setup using the loudspeakers available. I believe Phoenix has 32. Each audio track can be assigned to an audio channel, the conventional format for distribution, or to an audio "object". It makes for incredible sound.
One special extra for the techies was a private tour of the Projection Rooms at the theater. We took a private elevator up to the floor and got to see the amazing tech behind the scenes. Here are a few pictures.
